Temples in Sringeri.

Temples in Sringeri.
-------------------

Sage Rishyasringa.. pic courtesy. Sringeri.net.

Sringeri has always been an attraction to many sages, this small town gets its name from the Sage Rishyasringa who meditated here. His father Vibandaka is also said to have meditated here. Then Adhi Shankarar established one of His Peetams here in this town.
We got down from bus in the morning and drizzle welcomed us in Sringeri.  Its already the end of august and its still raining here. Got a room in Yathri nivas and thro the window could see river thunga in full form.

The newly built RajaGopuram of the temple is a spectacular one.
Goddess Sharadambal always amazes the devotee. Her calmness, Her peace, Her knowledge, Her beauty are like a magnet which pulls everyone towards Her.  Many devotees were here for Aksharabhayasam. Who will not study if they are ignited under Her shadows. We had darshan of Adhi Shankarar, Thorana Ganapathi, Shakthi Ganapathy, Vidyasankarar, Durga, Sureshwarachariar, Rama.

We crossed the foot bridge and reached Guru Nivas and had darshan of Guruji. Performed paadhapuja, bikshavandhanam and came out to have lunch at the temple complex. The food served here is so delicious with a vegetable, sambar, rasam, and buttermilk and payasam.

In the evening went to Kigga a small village 10kms away from Sringeri to Sringeswara temple. Sage Rishyasringa and his wife Shantha meditated and merged with God here. The lingam here is in the shape of Rudhraksha with a small horn on the head (Rishyasringa who was born to Sage Vibandaka and Urvashi with a horn)

lush green fields on the way to Durga temple.

Sage Adhi Shankara came to Sringeri and He installed the idol of Goddess Sharadambal which is in sandal wood. She is an embodiment of knowledge. Adhi Shankara setup temples in all four directions of the temple so as to protect Her and His disciples from any harm. They are like bodyguards. These temples are maintained by Sri Mutt and they are spic and span.

In the South, a temple dedicated to Goddess Durga also known as Vana Durga.   She did not look fierce but She was full of peace. Dressed in gold, She looked magnificently beautiful. Behind the Durgai, to the right is a Shiva lingam, Mallikarjuna (seems to be there even before the arrival of  Adhi Shankara). The priest gave me a blouse piece, haldi, kumkum and half a dozen glass bangles and flowers. my joy was boundless.

We then went to Kere Anjaneyar temple in the west. This idol is on top of an anthill where one can see snakes even today. The priest here, confirms that there are about 300 snakes in that anthill,  which do not do any harm to the people.

On our way to Kalikambal temple could see carpet of green, was a feast to the eyes.

Temple of Goddess Kalikambal,  situated in the north of Sringeri, is as beautiful and calm as Goddess Sharadambal.

We then went to Kala Bhairava Temple which is in the east. Kala Bhairava is the fierce aspect of Lord Shiva. Due to rain the auto we went could not take us till the Shrine and we walked up to the Shrine ( the entire stretch was slippery) where The Lord was standing alone to give us His blessings.  Kala Bhairava is worshipped as ksetra pala, the guardian deity of a temple complex. The temple keys are ceremoniously placed at his feet after closing the doors and taken back with his permission for opening the doors of the main temple.

The Lingam that Sage Vibandaka prayed to is in Malahanikareswarar Temple which is inside the bazaar road of Sringeri, one can easily miss the temple as this is situated in the middle of shops, hotels and houses. But as you alight the 170 steps to the Shrine one could easily feel the calmness inside.  Malahanikareswarar means 'Destroyer of the impurities of the soul'.

Sthamba Ganapathi. It is in this temple that, Sri Ahinava Narasimha Bharati(1599 – 1622) 24th Acharya, noticed the absence of any Ganesha image, drew a figure of Ganesha with a piece of turmeric on one of the front pillars and worshiped it. Ever since, the outlines of Ganesha have been gradually bulging out, presenting a base relief and the granite stone behind it sounds hollow inside, while over the rest of the pillar is solid.

HH Sringeri Swamigal visits Malahanikareswara Temple during Shivarathri and His Vardhanthi and performs poojai.

All these temples could be visited in two hours time by autorickshaws. The temples are normally open in the morning till 12noon and in the evening from 6 pm to 7.30pm.

Temples in and around Kumbakonam

We reached Swamimalai, one of the Arupadai Veedu temples,  on a Saturday evening, climbed the 60 steps to have His Darshan. And again on Sunday morning went to have darshan.  Took spl tickets, went inside to have a more closer look at Him.  Swaminathaswami is a handsome God.  Tall, brimming with knowledge, who could tell the meaning of OM to His own father Shiva. I recited Swaminathaswami karavalamba sthothram and started singing a thirupugazh.  The priest said sing another one.

From there our journey of the day continued to thiruvaiyaru temple, Lord Panchanadeeswarar the presiding deity with his consort Dharmasamvardhini were ready to shower their blessings. Got opportunity to sing madhar pirai and Nannu kanna in their respective sannadhis.

From there we proceeded to Saint Thiagaraja's Samadhi,  where Abhishekam was in progress. The priest here asked me can you sing.  Was very happy to sing two krithi.

Our next pit stop was Narayana theerthar jeeva  samadhi, Thirupoonthuruthi, our native village.Never knew all theses days the great composer's was a jeeva samadhi. The place was rich with positive vibes.  Sang two tharangams there. Then we visited Soundaryanayaki Sametha Pushpavaneswarar temple in Thirupoothuruthi (one of the saptha sthana temples).
While driving back to Swamimalai had Darshan at  Aabathsagayeswarar temple, Thirupazhanam one of the saptha sthana temples..

Drove back to Swamimalai for lunch and little rest. After a short nap, drove to Koothanur saraswathi temple. It was  great to see the paddy fields.  The velvetty green carpet was a treat to the eyes.  We had a good darshan at the temple.  Kept pens near Her and received her blessings.
On our way to Govindapuram we saw a big peacock which came to quench its thirst in kollidam.

Govindapuram the place filled was  with Rama nama, the gigantic Anjaneyar welcomed us. We were speechless inside the adhishtanam. Breathing the rama nama which was in the air. Went to Mettur swamigal adhishtanam which is nearing completion. Such an ardent devotee of Paramacharya a humble and a simple soul who shed his mortal coil on deepavali day last year.
Peeped inside vittal panduranga temple.  Oh what a contrast..  Such calmness inside the mutt and so much of cheerfullness in the temple which is the meaning of our life.

Next we stopped in thiruvidaimarudhur temple, a really huge nandhi for the huge mahalingam.  We drove back to Swamimalai to see the Lord in sandhana kappu.
Next day dawned and we started our return journey to Madras. While returning we visited Vaitheeswaran kovil and Chidambaram temple enroute. Many devotees throng the Vaitheeswaran kovil  that they are not able to maintain it cleanly. Feet start sticking to the floor of the temple.

Visiting Chidambaram temple has always been a favourite of mine. Sang adia padhathai, Siva chidambaram and pitha pirai in chidambaram temple and was fortunate to have closer view of the Lord and Chidambara  ragasiyam. The trip to Chidambaram is unfinished if one does not have the Darshan at Thillai Kali temple. Thillai Kali a ferrocious Goddess was getting ready for the yearly festival.

A trip still fresh in our memory.

Trip to Thirunelveli

Reached thirunelveli on Saturday morning and after getting fresh left for Ambasamudram. On either side of the road could see the carpet of lush
green paddy fields due to the recent rains. The trees were looking fresh and the climate was pleasant.

I have always noticed that there are about 50 Sastha temples enroute to Ambai from nellai and most of them don't have a roof on top.But this time veryhappy to see that almost all temples had a roof. Used to feel bad that it's HE who gives us roof and shelter and HE is standing without that.

Boothanadhar Sannidhi.

Madathi amman Sannadhi.
Normally the temple is opened only when devotees inform about their visit.Kutralathamman Sannadhi.
We drove to our temple and to our surprise there were about 15 ppl waiting for the priest.
Those ppl were a family of Odhuvars and they sang Thevarams full throated and with utmost devotion during the abishekam.

Poorna Pushkaamba Sametha Sri Nalayudhamudaiyar Sastha.

Is a blessing always to sing Saranam Ayyappa krithi and chant Sastha Dasakam and Sarana ghosham there.
Nellaiappar Temple.
After poojai returned to nellai at about 3.30pm. After lunch went to nellaippar temple. Was a great blessing to b
e there on somvara pradhosham day. Had a fantastic darshan of lord. All the five lingams and kubera lingam .
Kanthimathi Amman Temple.

sang Sri Kanthimathim inside the sanctum of kanthmathiamman. SHE is a majestic beauty clad in white and red silk Saree waiting to shower her blessings. While we Came out of her temple we were fortunate to see Nellaippar with Amman on Rishaba vahanam lead by a well decorated elephant. Walking around Nellaippar temple gives us positive vibes. Came back with lots of blissful memories.
