Lecture Demonstration on Identical ragas with different Identities.
"A veena player once threatened to kidnap B. Krishnamoorthy, if he refused to teach him vocal music. But hearing the musicologist talk about his love for teaching, I think he wouldn't mind being kidnapped, as long as he can teach music, even it were to his kidnapper!"..have read in The Hindu long ago.
Shri B Krishnamoorthy was indeed worth kidnapping to learn naunces about carnatic music,
Was a blessing to listen to this walking encyclopedia of carnatic music at Arkay Convention Centre today morning, a lecture on Identical ragas with different identities supported by Gayathri Girish and Ravi Kiran.
B Krishanmoorthy sir spoke about ragas handled by Muthuswami Deekshithar and Saint Thiagaraja. He explained about Ragas like
Easa manohari(Manasa Sri Ramachandra and Sri Gananatha);
Devakriya (Sri Vatukanadha - Deekshithar, Natimata marachithivo of Thiagaraja),
Saraswathi manohari (Saraswathi manohari -Deekshithar and Enthavedu of Thiagaraja),
Salakabhairavi (Padhavini - Thiagaraja and Thiagarajena samrakshithoham of Deekshithar),
Kannada Gowlai (Sogasujooda - Thiagaraja and Neelothpalambikaya - Deekshithar),
Sindhuramakriya (Sadhashivena of deekshithar and devadhi deva of Thiagaraja),
Chayatharangini (Krupajoodaku - Thiagaraja
Sri ragam (Sri kamalambike of Deekshithar and Entharo mahanubhavulu - Thiagaraja)
to cover such a vast topic in just 2 hours is a herculean task. learnt lot of small intricacies from all of them. B K Sir explained how to sing a krithi, where to sing it soft and where to stress the sahithyam etc.
He aslo shared his acquaintance with Paramacharya of Kanchi, Once Swamigal was camping in Orikkai and suddenly after the morning poojai was over, Swamigal wanted to leave for Kanchipuram and started walking (everyone knows Swamigal's walking is equal to our running ). While walking towards Kanchipuram, Swamigal asked Sri. B Krishnamoorthi, "Unakku Ghanta Ragathila Kamalama Navavarnam pada theriyuma (Do you know to sing Kamalamba Navavarnam in Ghanta Ragam), Krishnamoorthi said, "Theriyum Periavah (I know to sing that krithi)" and started singing while walking/running.
it was more like a chamber concert. Great singing by all of them. Special thanks to Sri. Arkay Ramakrishnan for the great ambience at the hall. Looking forward for such good lectures.
